TIMBER SASH WINDOWS

What is a Wooden Sash Window?

A wooden sash window is a window containing two panes (sashes) that slide vertically up and down. Each sash is counterbalanced using a lead weight hidden inside the frame so when either sash is opened they do not. Each sash window has weights hidden inside the ‘box frame’ which counterbalances the window so they can be opened at any level without slamming shut. It is also possible to use a 'Spiral Balance' system which is routed into the internal frame.

What styles of Timber Sash Windows are available?

There are different designs of timber sash windows available, most different designs have had their time in history so will likely match the time period in which the property was built, such as Victorian or Georgian. The largest difference between the different styles is how many glazing bars are used within each sash. Why not browse through the photos on our website you will see different styles of glazing bar layout.

What are the benefits of Wooden Sash Windows?

Better airflow through your property. When the top and bottom sashes are positioned in the open position in the middle the gap at the top of the window lets war, stale air out and brings in the cool, fresh air in - very scientific!

Originally they were also wooden sash windows were also constructed to be drafty which allowed for better ventilation when properties were heated using open fires, of course, these days there is no need for that so all our timber sash windows fit snugly and include draft seals to keep you warm in the winter!

Ease of Maintenance - Wood has very good insulation properties and is of course durable, as long as the sashes are repainted when required then sash windows will last a lifetime - we have actually removed original sash windows from houses that are over a hundred years old.

Durability and Security - Most timber sash windows these days are double-glazed and include internal sash locks as standard plus we also offer internal restrictors so you can have your windows open on a sunny day without the risk of someone being able to gain access to your home. Double glazing windows are very hard indeed to break also.

As a guide a standard double-glazed sash window is likely to cost between £850 ex VAT and £2,000 ex VAT, including installation and finishing.
