Are Double Glazed Sash Windows Energy Efficient?

Any heat lost through a surface does so through conduction, when heat is lost through a single glazed window the heat is lost through the thin single layer of glass. Double glazing has two layers of glass filled with an inert gas such as Argon which is less ‘conductive’ and therefore transfers less heat.

Therefore it is harder for the cold or warm air externally to be transferred to the internal pane through the gas.

Double Glazing Controls Temperature

As mentioned above double glazing has two layers of glass with inert gas such as argon in the cavity, therefore it is harder for the cold or warm air externally to be transferred to the internal pane through the gas therefore keeping the inside of a room that has double glazing installed at a more consistent temperature.

Spacing Between Panes

Each of the two panes of glass is separated by what’s called a ‘spacer’ which forms the cavity which holds the argon gas.

Spacers are made from metal such as aluminum and are sealed to keep the gas from escaping and it is recommended for best performance of double gazing to have a spacer of between 12mm and 20mm.

Reflective Coatings Applied to Glass

Furthermore each pane of glass has a reflective coasting applied during the manufacturing process which does as expected and ‘reflects’ heat away from the direction in which it comes, so heat gets reflected from inside the house back in and in the summer from outside the house back out.

Reduction of Noise Pollution

Another benefit of double glazing being filled with Argos gas is that due to the fact it is denser than air when a noise travelling at high frequency tries to pass through it is slowed down and therefore reduced.

Double vs Single Glazing

It is generally agreed that between 10% and 18% of heat from your home is lost through your glazing, this is of course dependent upon how many windows your home has and how large these widows are.

Energy efficient double glazed windows may reduce heat loss from your home by about 70% and 85% depending on the specification of double glazing chosen.

This represents a serious saving on monthly heating bills and therefore the cost of your house to run.

It is not only the glazing in new timber double glazed windows that prevents heat loss, they also come with draft seals which original sash windows did not have as historically homes were heated by open fire and therefore by not sealing the windows this allowed form dirty, smoky air to be released from your home.

Are Double Glazed Windows Worth Buying?

Considering the amount of money you would be able to save by having double or even triple glazed windows installed in your home, it is always worth getting a free quotation.

New windows will quickly become both cost-effective and value-for-money with energy savings and money taken off your bill. As the windows will be new, they will also come with a ten year guarantee.
